La
Calisto was premiered on November 28th 1651 at The Teatro San
Apollinare in Venice. Cavali wrote it as bold entertainment for
the public theatres. It is a shameless crowd pleaser- a brazen
mix of comedy and drama, spiced with gender bending and bawdy
situations. The story is based on the constellation myth from Ovid’s
metamorphosis. According to Ovid, Callisto is a wood nymph ”not
one who spent her time at the loom, but one of Diana’s warriors,
carrying in her hand a javelin or bow ”. She is seduced
by Jove disguised as Diana. The deception is discovered by Jove’s
wife Juno who turns Callisto into a bear. Jove in his Mercy places
her beyond Juno’s jealousy, in the heavens as the constellation
Ursa Major.
